For children, but also adults from all around the world, being able to whistle represents quite an important skill to learn as it can be used for a wide variety of purposes. Whether you’d like to whistle a song, call a pet, attract a person’s attention or just do it for fun, whistling is quite interesting. It has often been said that it’s only difficult until you get the hang of it. With this in mind, there are different ways to whistle that can be practiced by just about anyone. Before attempting anything, it is important to remember that whistling is a skill which cannot be mastered form the first try. Therefore, once you find your own particular sweet spot using one of the techniques outlined below, continue to practice until the whistle sounds vivid and you’re able to do it fast and without encountering any trouble.
1. Learn to whistle with your lips
Whistling by using the lips without needing to use your fingers is one of the most common types of whistles all around the globe.
In order to do so, you’ll need to pucker your lips in the shape that they form while trying to give a kiss or drink water using a straw. When this is done, you need to make sure that the opening between your mouth and the outside is not too big, but actually quite small. By breathing through this small opening a variety of notes can be formed. Being able to whistle while using this strategy also requires the use of your tongue. Not to worry, as the tongue needs to be slightly curled while resting at the bottom of our mouth.
It’s good to remember that everyone has their sweet spot, so finding the most comfortable position is entirely up to you. A whistle is formed through the use of air, so slowly begin to blow air through your mouth and the opening in your lips. Make sure to adjust your tongue accordingly in order to hear notes. Once you find the position that enables you to whistle without any stress, it is time to start doing it while slightly moving your tongue up, down left and right in order to create a wider array of notes. Additionally, blowing more rapidly or slowly can also influence the sound that is heard while whistling.
2. Whistle with your fingers
The second most popular method of whistling in the world also requires the use of your lips, tongue and fingers. This method is known to produce louder notes which can be heard from a bigger distance, unlike the melodic sound which is produced by whistling with your lips. Many believe that this method may also be harder, but the opinions vary and what is hardest mostly depends on the opinion of the person who is whistling.
In order to be able to whistle with the help of your fingers, you’ll first need to decide which fingers to use in order to create the clearest note possible. This step is entirely up to you and depends on which two fingers feel more comfortable when being placed in your mouth at the same time. It is good to remember to use a finger on a hand and its opposite on other hand, so if you’d like to use your index finger, make sure to use both of them on your both hands.
Once this decision is made, create the shape of an inverted V with the two fingers that you chose. Once this is done, place the inverted V finger form under your tongue. Make sure that the fingers you chose meet directly behind your back teeth and touch each other. All you have to do now is close the lips over your fingers and begin blowing air.
Move your fingers around in order to ensure that you’re comfortable and to find the best spot for whistling. Once the method is mastered, the sound created by the whistle can be loud and shrill, making it perfect for attracting a person’s attention or calling your pet.
Practice makes perfect
To sum everything up, make sure not to give up too quickly, as learning how to whistle correctly does require a little bit of time. Moving your jaw, tongue and the position of your lips can create different tunes, so practice until everything seems perfect.
