Maintaining one’s composure and calm in tough situations is a must at the workplace or at home. A calm and organized person is the type of employee any company wants and a family member that is always calm and composed is a cherished one.
In order to achieve the perfect state of calmness, here are some tips that you can follow:
1. Share
One of the best ways to get to get rid of the bad emotions and stress from work is to share them with a close one. Some of the ways through which you can do something like this are:
- In person
- On the phone
E-mails and notes and simply too impersonal and too cold and won’t make too much of a difference, because the bad emotions will stay. Instead, talking with the person through the use of your mouth is what may improve the situation once you’ve decided to share your thoughts.
2. Try to relax whenever you feel angry
Some of the things that make one angry are not as bad when thought over. A good way of not intensifying the anger that one feels is to breathe and resist the temptation of starting an argument that could lead to unforeseen consequences. Some of the ways of calming oneself are:
- Repeat the phrase „I understand”
Whenever the anger is taking over, instead of lashing out at the other person, try to repeat the phrase „I understand”. Doing won’t add fuel on the fire and the conflict won’t degenerate too much, thus helping you calm down as well.
- Breathe
Remembering to breathe while turning away from a bad situation may be the only thing required in order to make everything better, so make sure to breathe and tell yourself that things are right.
3. Look at the things that make you angry in an objective way
If there is something or someone that makes you angry every day, try to look at everything in an objective way. Seeing things through an objective eye can make the anger go away as reason steps in. Being subjective and only listening to your own thoughts does not represent the proper way to go, as it will simply generate more anger.
- Learn to listen to both sides of the conflict so your mind will be able to analyze both correctly and avoid making any judgement mistakes.
- Repeat the exact words that that particular person said to make you angry. If you keep repeating them, they won’t affect you as much as they did in the first place
- Take a few days to cool off if you went through a powerful conflict where a lot of emotions were mixed.
4. Do things that calm you down
After going through a rough argument where a lot of words were thrown in, some of the best ways to calm down would be to do things that require a lot of concentration and that thus, take your mind off of the recent conflict. Some of these things may include:
- Listening to classical music or the type that calms you down
- Various hobbies that require a lot of concentration
- Working out
- Playing different sports (boxing, jogging, etc).
By considering the tips that have been outlined in this article, your ability to handle emotional tension, anger and conflict are sure to improve. Simply going through a situation represents one of the most important steps in being able to overcome it, so whenever a conflict comes up, let it pass without getting angry, as doing so can only worsen a situation.
