Many theories and techniques have been expounded by people who have experienced astral projection or “out of body” experience. When you are consciously sleeping your soul leaves your body and you can watch your own body lying supine where you left it and expand your awareness as you teleport your body through space or simply float around freely.
Neuroscientists are continuously researching on the amazing potential of the brain to use certain techniques of self-perception and move away from one’s own body into another form in an out-of- body experience.
One of the tried and tested ways for most people who have reported success with this type of out of body experience is to practice meditation. At this time the body is relaxed even when one is sitting down or lying horizontally. Here are a few tips to help you to learn how to experience this astral travel on purpose.

Relax your mind and body
Find a quiet spot in your home where you will not be disturbed. You can stay outdoors if you prefer. Many people adopt the relaxed position of lying on their backs in preparation for sleeping. The ideal time to practice this is between 4 am to 6 am when everything is quiet and concentration is easier.

Select a comfortable position
Sit down in a comfortable chair or lie down on the bed. Your body should be totally relaxed and not tense. Flex, stretch and release to feel calm and ready for the experience.

Repeat your decision to watch yourself going to sleep
Tell yourself that you are now ready for the astral projection and want to experience it. Close your eyes when you are doing this and slowly slip into a meditative state where you start becoming less aware of your surroundings. Many thoughts will wander through your mind and you should slowly let them go even as you remain focused.

Do not fall asleep
Drift into a state where you are almost asleep but conscious of your mental and physical self. Every limb in your body should relax and you should not be able to feel any part of your body. Remain focused on the inside of your mind and body and you slowly feel a vibration within you. Relax and breathe deeply till the sounds inside you diminish and grow faint. Your body will not be still and the silence will engulf you.

Your body will feel like lead
You will feel no sensation in your limbs at this point though you can move your nose, eyes and mouth. Slight pressure will build in your brain and you will a tingling sensation after which you will feel limp.

Different techniques to experience out-of-body projection
You may use different methods now to try to lift your soul out of your physical body. There are many suggestions that can help you do this successfully. You can imagine an object over your head and as you keep observing the same, it will slowly descend and get larger or recede and get smaller. Try to reach out to the object without moving your arms or legs and you will slowly feel your soul lifting out of your body.
Similarly you can try to use an imaginary rope or a ladder to propel your soul out of your body. Gradually feel yourself moving out of your body. You will slowly realize that your body is floating in space. Slowly open your eyes and you will be able to calmly observe your body lying in the bed or on the chair where you were last. Enjoy this astral projection experience.
