Research on the subject reveals that students who passed out in flying colors in school find it difficult to cope when they attend college. One of the reasons that this could happen is that in school textbooks contain all the relevant information and students just have to spend time poring over them. In college, professors lecture and if notes are not taken, then a lot of research has to be carried out to get information on the same subject.
One of the best ways to improve one’s retentive power and understanding is to take notes effectively. A study was done on students jotting down points against those who used a lap top for taking notes. It was noticed that those who took notes found it easier to comprehend as they listened intently to the lecture and wrote only relevant points. They were able to review their notes and remember the salient points. Those who used the lap top wrote down every word and missed the purpose of the lecture. The laptops are also vulnerable to different types of viruses.
1. Learn how to take down notes effectively
Some of us can take down notes very fast while others are not so adept. This is a skill that we acquire when we are in school. With practice one can develop a customized way to write in shorthand or try to do a quick course in shorthand.
It is not necessary to write down “word- for- word.”A Professor will try to cover as many points on a subject in the limited time they have. Concentrate on the main points and list them as you go along. Use only keywords and make simple precise sentences. Add information when there is a break in the lecture.
2. Listen intently
This is very crucial to becoming a topper in class. The best way to learn is to pay attention in class and jot down notes when a professor is lecturing. You can always go home and read up the subject and try and fill in the blanks when you understand more clearly.
3. Use the right material and pens to store the notes
Write down the matter in a three-ring binder and not on scraps of paper as you can easily lose them. This way you can remove pages to hand out or inset fresh notes whenever required.
Use highlighters to focus on certain areas when prompted by the instructor as you can be sure these are important points.
4. Maintain a positive attitude
Have an open-mind to help you receive information. Always review your notes, look up the dictionary for meaning of words when you do not understand them. Edit what you have written and transfer the information to a folder. Label each folder correctly and file them. Make sure to include the date and chapters that require reference.
5. Paraphrase and write down core concepts in your own words
This is like a revision and what you learn will stick in your memory longer. You will also be prepared to continue listening and making notes the next day. By taking notes you can save yourself the trouble of going through the whole chapter. Your professor will pick up important points and inadvertently prepare you for the test that he plans to ensure that the students have understood the subject.
6. It is a good strategy to compare notes with your friends
You will be able to understand the subject clearer as you may have not jotted down something that was very relevant and enlightening. You can share the material you have gathered and have a short discussion with the others to know if you have understood the subject clearly.
