One has often seen in musical performances or the orchestra, the musicians are reading music notes which look like a series of meaningless symbols to a layperson. To a musician, it’s his music sheet; the notes are a language which is distinct and very important to put together an orchestra. This language has been around for many centuries and is an integral part of any training involving learning an instrument or becoming a serious musician. It’s like learning the building blocks of language like the alphabets for any language are important to master. If you want to pursue a career in music, or want to play any instrument, you need to be familiar with the different ways to read music. There are different levels of reading music as a process and the following ways will give you an idea on how to go about with starting out on this musical journey.
Understand the staff
You can consider staff to be the basic alphabet in the context of the language of music. Staff refers to a series of five lines running horizontally across each page of music notes. The gaps between these five lines denote the different pitches and notes that act as a guide to paying each note. In order to get the melody and play the different notations, you need to start by learning how to read staff.
Learn the treble clef and bass clef
Clefs are the lines that denote the range at which the instrument should be played in and knowing these two clefs forms the first step to creating a tune. Generally, all songs or music played at a higher pitch use the treble clef. The bass clef is used in music or voices or instruments played at a lower pitch.
Learning the rhythm
Rhythm and music go hand in hand with each other. Each piece of music sheet has various symbols indicating the different notes and rests and the beats and pauses between each one. This chart is actually the reference point on when to start playing a note, when to stop, pause etc.
Figuring out the time signature
We all are aware of something called the pulse or beats where music is concerned. Beats are referred to any dance form while listening to the meter or beat of a particular song that is playing in the background. This forms the soul for any musical piece and any lay person can identify it clearly as every musical piece or a song ahs a particular beat. In the context of music notes, this is referred to as meter and is a series of fractional numbers The numerator, which is the top number refers the number of beats in one measure and the denominator or the lower case number is the pulse to which you tap your feet.
Identify the rests
Sometimes there is a stop in between two notes and that is called a rest, wherein there is no music being played. Reading the rests forms an important part of the process as there are different lengths of rests which make up the entire melody.
