Studying is not about reading and re-reading the text books, or even rigorously studying one night before the examinations. It is about retaining information in your mind for a lifetime and being able to apply the knowledge at your work place irrespective of whichever profession you choose. In school, students are never in the mood to study. The real study occurs at home.
We keep using the term good studying habits without actually knowing the meaning of it. By habit we mean an involuntary behavior that has been imbibed in our minds ever since we were kids. It is essential to harness the power of habits and incorporating it in the study environment. In order to incorporate this habit, there are certain do’s that need to be followed. These include:
Minimizing the habits of distraction
With the advancement of science and technology, we are exposed to a lot of gadgets and are addicted to most of them. These gadgets include Ipods, PSPs, Ipads etc. With social networks also catching up, students are hooked to the virtual world for hours. This is causing a lot of distraction to the study pattern of children as well as teenagers. Students feel they can multitask their way out and score well in class, but that’s not true. Multitasking often hampers the studying part of it, for other activities are more tempting, but studying. Another form of distraction is the mobile phone which is flooded with apps and games that will take you to a new dimension. Thus, in order to study well, one needs to minimize on the distracting habits. Parents can intervene, but not take harsh measures, as this will distract the student even more.
Creating a consistent work space for studying
The habits that students form, go all the way down to the point that they have to hunt for tools and supplies in order to study. This is extremely time consuming and students tend to kill time just by searching for the itinerary. Thus, parents should get involved here and help the students arrange their desks and chairs such that whatever is required, is already kept there. Items like pens, pencils, erasers, calculators etc. are a must. If the students happen to study in communal areas, then a bin or a box should be kept nearby, such that it is easy for them to get it without wasting time.
Hunt for the perfect location and posture to study
With technological wonders at its peak with a fine touch of flexibility, finding the right place to study is no longer a constraint. Students can lie on the bed and still work on their laptop or rest on the couch and read a book or sit on the floor and work.
It is to be understood that it is extremely difficult to concentrate on your studies while lying on bed or sitting on the ground. The body has a habit of switching to the relaxation or sleepy mode causing educational distraction. A right kind of posture needs to be developed, such that maximum concentration is derived.
