Parents often have this conception that value education is nothing but an academic module only meant for schools. Alas! That’s not so anymore. Values need to be taught at home such that when the kids go to school their behaviour reflects good parenting.
To begin with, one needs to understand what values are! Values are believed to be taught by parents and caught by children. The rationale behind imparting values is that it is a form of motivation. It gets imbibed in a child’s mind that if he does something right, then he will be rewarded. Values can only be caught by children till the age of 8 on the higher side. The reason being when the children are between the ages of 4-8 years they are susceptible to learning new things.
Therefore, here are some tips on how to teach values to your kids proactively.
Find a way which enables the kids to tell the truth
The ideal way to encourage your children to speak the truth is being truthful yourself. Children have a tendency of taking signals from people’s behavior, so it is essential to avoid any form of deception from your end. Another way of instilling the value of honesty is not to overreact if you find your child lying. Try devising a way to extract the truth out of him.
Insist that your children make amends
Making a child tell sorry is pretty easy, but as a parent you need to understand whether he is genuinely means it. Thus, if you feel your child has behaved in a way he shouldn’t have, give him time to ponder over it. See how he reacts and accordingly counsel him. If he has acted in a wrong way with a friend, ask him to adopt particular gestures such that he can say sorry and their friendship can relight.
Encourage your child to take up on any challenge
Determination is a strong value and it needs to be encouraged and instilled in the children’s mind from a tender age. The simplest trick is to avoid over-praising and providing honest feedback. Another way of increasing the challenge taking factor is by making your children do things which he is not interested in. This will enable him to find out an alternative way in doing it and will make him overcome the challenge.
Teach your children to be compassionate
Your child should be careful about not hurting someone else’s feelings. He should develop a compassionate attitude towards others’ sorrows and misery. Compassionate behavior comes from home. Your child observes the way you behave with each other.
To sum up, values come from home and the kind of upbringing you offer to your child. Be proactive and understanding, for in future if your child misbehaves, then you will be held accountable for his/her actions. For all over the globe it is believed that parents impart values and it is your genes that speak.
