Being a bouncer is not exactly a very favored profession as most people look down upon it as a profession requiring more brawn than brains. But it is not so. It is like any other vocation and has its roles and job description spelled out. More and more, they are required to prevent ugly situations from developing by using their people-skills. They are required to have a balanced outlook, keep their emotions in check, and not carry their feelings into their personal lives. A large and intimidating personality is an asset; but not necessarily a pre-requisite.
Here are 5 steps to help you become a good bouncer.
1. Prepare Yourself For The Role
- Get to know the rules regarding bouncers in your State or Province. Find out if training is mandatory. Talk to local bouncers – they will help you out.
- Enroll and train in martial arts or self-defense classes. You never know when you may have to use force in your line of work.
- You will require a criminal record check. Get one as it takes time. A felony record disqualifies you to work in states like New York.
- Do a course in First Aid and CPR. This is an added asset and mandatory in certain states.
- Develop your people skills. Respect and hospitality should become second nature. However you should be able to be firm and intimidating when the situation demands.
- Keep yourself fit and gain indirect experience through contact sports.
2. Make Your Resume
- Highlight your skills and experience in your resume.
- Be sure to mention any training or certification in martial arts, boxing, or self defense
- If you have played any contact sports, put them down in your resume
- Any exposure or experience in the security field, however minor, should be included in your resume.
3. Gain Experience
It may not be possible to become a bouncer as a rookie. Start off by doing gigs as a security guard at carnivals, music concerts, or smaller firms and establishments. Besides giving you valuable experience, it will look great on your resume, too.
4. Get An Interview
Once you are set with your resume and experience, it is time to get the interview for employment.
- Start cold calling. You may approach managers and heads of security of night clubs, bars and pubs, to inquire about openings. Take help from the yellow pages.
- Check for ads near clubs, dance halls, and in local news papers. You can also check online from sites like Craigslist.
- Network – if you have friends or acquaintances in the nightclub or bar business get in touch with them. They may give important leads or better still lead you to the owner or hiring manager.
5. At The Interview
- Dress professionally for the interview – a clean shirt with blazer and neat shoes will do. An interview is a formal occasion and you have to be dressed appropriately.
- Be comfortable. Show a positive attitude and be attentive. Point out that you can take control of a situation and diffuse it without force.
