Photography is one of the most sought after professions in these times. Cinema, TV, news papers., magazines, the Internet, in short all print and electronic media, will cease to exist if it were not for photography and the man behind the camera. You may have enjoyed that movie and admired the great visuals but would have hardly bothered to read the credits mentioning the cameraman.
Aspiring to be a cameraman is indeed a very commendable decision. The path is not easy but the following 5 steps will show you the way.
1. Decide Your Specialization
The field of photography is vast. There are still cameramen and there are those who make movies. You can also choose between sports, wildlife, travel and leisure, war, news events and yes, even cookery shows. And, of course, the film and television field is very exciting and demanding. You should decide early to focus your attention in that particular specialty.
2. Education and Training
There are no particular educational qualifications required for becoming a cameraman. It is, however necessary to have an in depth knowledge of elements of lighting, exposure, composition and editing. If you are going to specialize in film and television it is essential that you know the history and techniques used in the craft.
You could take a diploma in photography and filming to get to grips with your craft. If you are in college , you can major in film and television production.
3. Gain Experience
Start off small. Volunteer to be the cameraman at home, school and community events. You can also volunteer to provide pictures to magazines and publications, for free, if need be.
- Producing a short film and hosting it on the internet is a great idea.
- Take part in photography and video making competitions.
- Do a part time job at your local TV studio. Assist the assistant to the cameraman if required.
- Get experience and establish your reputation.
4. Build Your Resume
Your resume should contain all the experience you have. List out all the jobs you have done, paid or unpaid. Your educational qualifications and awards or recognitions should figure in the resume. Enclose a portfolio of your work if possible.
5. Hunt for a Job
Let’s face it. You have to work hard at getting a job. It is the only well established cameramen who have jobs knocking at their doors.
The routine is the same as for other jobs – put up your resume on the net, scan the employment columns in the newspapers, use the social media, and network. Networking is perhaps the most effective method. Call up all the people you know and who can make a difference. One of them will surely lead you to a job.
Take on any job in the beginning and climb your way to the top.
Now you are an established and well-known cameraman, don’t forget those who have helped you to the top in small and big ways. Show humility and help out the other strugglers out there.
