Dotcoms are flourishing and on a big scale in the recent times; so if you have given it a thought on becoming a web developer, the choice is excellent. Much more than programming, web development has a lot of fun involved, mixed with creativity and innovation.
Creativity and passion
The two are interlinked at every stage of web development, especially when bringing out web pages that are interactive and responsive for the end client’s to use. As a web developer, one is expected to;
- Think out of the box,
- Play with fonts, colours, shades, web designs, templates and the whole architecture,
- Spend a lot of time coming up with solutions for the client not to have downtime,
- Stay updated with the current technological advancements, and
- Have an open mind.
Be open to learning
- You may have interned with the best and learnt from the pros, or may have won accolades and awards while beginning out in the world of web development, but be very open to learning. Technological advancements happen at the blink of an eye and every second, keep yourself updated.
- The programming languages such as JavaScript, HTML and CSS should be acquainted, along with frameworks including PHP, .NET, Python and Ruby. A web developer may also have to work in conjunction with web designers, content creator or developers.
Network and connect
- There are various social networking and social media sites, where experts bring in the latest news, views and tips from around the world. Enroll and join the pages, learn from the pros and imbibe them in your new projects. Build connections with novice and experienced web developers alike, a pot of gold can be struck and best sharing practices can happen almost anytime and anywhere.
- Enroll yourself for a course online, as the ‘internet’ thing is best taught on internet itself, and no theory can replace the practical experience.
Long hours
It is a fact that web developers sometimes have to stay awake while their families snooze, and so you too should be prepared to burn the midnight lamps. This isn’t a daily occurrence, but when a critical project is on hand, you just cannot waste time or take chances.
Keep the client in the loop
When clients hand over a project, give them a tentative deadline. While taking baby steps and completing each stage, show the prototype to the client. If there be any changes to make, the client would inform you on the same lines, making your work easy and helping you put forth the deliverables on time.
Take a break while at work
Being in front of the computer screen round the clock can have side-effects in many ways, which is why it is important to take a break now and then. Stretch your arms, crush your knuckles, massage the neck, stretch your legs, have a cup of coffee or simply go for a short walk. Rejuvenate yourself, ideas would automatically flow in.
This is your chance to create a splash, which would be having a portfolio and samples to let out that brings in more clients for your occupation. Clients would want to see the niche web development styles you are fit for, and would ask for the same. Be ready to provide them with mock websites and demos, and get your drive to impress the potential employer too.
