Everybody wants to beautify his garden with different kinds of colorful plants. A colorful and well managed garden adds a splendid beauty to your place and make your living a nice one! Some people love gardening, others may not like it so much. But for everyone out there who wants to maintain a nice garden at their place, some thumb rules are required. Following are some useful tips for selecting plants particularly for your garden:
1. The Basics
- • First thing to look is that how much sun your garden gets a day. There are four categories:
o Full sun: 6-8 hours of full sun each day.
o Partial sun: 3-6 hours of sun each day.
o Partial shade: Sunlight comes filtered by leaves and foliage.
o Shade: Less than 3 hours of sun a day. Shady for most of the day.
- Secondly, what matters is the space available and kind of plant you want, one that tends to climb up at your fences or a base one lasting for a lifetime. Accordingly listed are some types of plants:
o Annuals: big punch of color for 1-2 seasons.
o Perennials: come back for several years.
o Vines: climb fences, trellis etc.
o Shrubs: ‘backbone’ of landscape. They last for years.
o Trees: typically last for a lifetime.
2. Shopping your plants
- See leaves, not flowers: Plants with blooms often appear attractive and healthy. But, this may not be the case, as during flowering, most of the energy is devoted to blooms, and so, root system may suffer!
- But in case, you want to confirm the color of blooms, wait for flowers before buying.
- Regular Shopping: Like as we shop for ourselves, garden also needs regular shopping. Don’t sit to think that you buy a bundle of plants once a year and this will assure a beautiful garden round the year. Gardening needs regular watch and care.
- Disease signs: Always do check signs of pest problems such as distorted leaves, holes in foliage, speckling or webbing on leaf surfaces etc. A diseased plant may infect your whole garden.
3. More checks
- Plant container must not have weeds in them. Make sure that. Else, they may disrupt the nutrient cycle of the plant and hence it will not last longer.
- Also, make sure that roots are properly buried in large amounts of mulch for necessary moisture requirements.
- In addition, avoid buying tall, spindly plants or the ones having weakened stem structure. Do check for cracks for sure in woody plants.
4. Decide a theme
- At the beginning of establishing your garden, decide the theme you want: how you want to design your borders etc. and accordingly buy new plants and trees for your garden and maintain its beauty.
- Always buy plants which suit you and your family personally. Never follow others.
- Budget: Large shrubs get quickly established but are expensive. Prefer as per your budget. Also, look for discounts and sales.
So, remember these tips and yes, happy gardening!
