There is nothing worse than feeling uncomfortable at your own compartment. The issue of choosing a roommate is not that serious but it is worth taking care of, at the very start. Some people take this lightly, assuming things will get right and they will adjust, but sometimes what they are left with is regret. Following are some tips which may prove useful while choosing your perfect roommate:
1. Living habits
Daily habits may vary from person to person and they may be irritating for others. Dirty dishes for days, trash here and there, not flushing the toilet, drinking milk from carton directly etc. are some issues which may be okay for one but annoying for others.
2. What kind of person he/she is
Figure out the personality traits of the person and check out if they personally suit you or not. You are not finding your life partner, but you are going to share your home with him/her. Also, look out the signs of whether the person seems to be trustworthy and helping or not. He must look honest, safe and normal.
3. Look beyond your best buddies
Many people blindly finalize living with their good friends. But often, it is noticed that such roommates are the people who mostly involve in clashes and arguments. Your best pal may have some annoying habits which you have not discovered yet. So, never be light at this issue. It can also mean a threat to your friendship too.
4. Sharing issues
Ask yourself if you are okay with sharing bedroom and bathroom or not. Privacy and opposite gender are the issues. If it will be okay if your roommate uses your things like shampoo, clothes etc. without your knowledge. If answer is NO, discuss it seriously.
5. Creep some more
Even after proper meeting and interview, try to discover some more facts about the person. Do check their profile at Facebook, twitter etc. You can have a good idea of the person through these.
6. Other things to consider
Issues like sleeping habits, study habits, cleanliness etc. are also very important to discuss in the beginning. All going to be roomies must agree upon each other, otherwise there may be arguments and even quarrels at your room. Partying habits also are worth considering in the beginning.
7. Visitors
Situation may be you want to bring some of your friends at your dorm. Discuss will your roomie be upset over this? You also may have different opinions. Better get answers to these questions now rather than later.
8. Make sure he has a steady income
Prior to finalizing things, you need to check income sources of the roomie. If he says he is a DJ or a freelance writer, you may need to worry. Obviously, you want any situations like paying full rent for months.
9. Roommate Realism
Be practical that you are not going to have a perfect roomie as you want. You also need to compromise in some issues.
So, good luck finding your right roomie!
